In order to become a Navy Seal you have to go through arguably the toughest training on earth. The stories of American heroes are truly fascinating and amazing. I am a history nerd and have read about a dozen Navy Seal books.
They have a simple saying, or question rather, that all Navy Seals end up answering in order to become Navy Seals.
“Why am I here?”
You see, “instructors,” or ass-kickers, at BUDS (Navy Seal 6-month school) are trying to see who will quit. That’s all they want to know. Where are the quitters in this room, the pretenders, as we are only looking for the mentally strong among them?
Physical strength is secondary…and everyone knows it. Which culminates at the 8-week mark with something called, “Hell Week” where the class gets 2 hours of sleep in a week period and are expected to perform at the highest of levels.
When you are putting yourself through that, your mind can run away from you. Especially if you haven’t answered that question honestly…why am I here?
This question is so profound because it cuts to the heart of human existence: what am I living for? what am I fighting for? The ones who find more within them, the truth of their reasons are usually the ones who win at the end.
Why do I tell you this? Because parents need to ask themselves the same thing in order to free themselves from the torture of their health and fitness.
Ask yourself, “why do you really want to be healthy? Why do you want to be strong? Why do you want to lose pounds?”
Folks usually say things like, “I want more energy to do things,” “I want to look good,” I don’t want to be like X,” and while these ring true, they aren’t deep enough.
Because what we have learned is that the number one reason busy, working, family-oriented adults are unable to transform their health and body and keep it that way is because they are losing the battle in the mind. Their reasons for change are surface level and do not cut deep enough to truly drive change.
When you find your why, your drive, you attach yourself to something much bigger and you begin to address the elephant in the room:
The mind. Your mindset, the story in your head about why you can or can’t.
Playing to lose, living our own failing self-fulling prophecies and quitting on ourselves way to soon is why parents don’t win at health. You have to be willing to dive deep into your fears, obstacles and story in order to play the game to win.
Ask yourself, how much did your story in your head, the expectations of quick and pain-less and your own self-sabotage impact you the last couple of times you ‘tried’ to into your best shape, lose the weight and keep it off?
If you are like so many of the parents we speak and work with, you know that life is busy, information is everywhere and it is scary to confront our habits and mindset.
Yet, that’s why we talk about this…it’s normal and there is something you can do about it. And we know that when this stage is conquered you open yourself to a truly powerful transformations that not only lasts but you achieve the goal.
In 2019 tell yourself the truth when it comes to your health and your lifestyle choices. What do you want? How will you show up different? What fears and growth will you embrace?
And why are you here?
For me, I realized that if I wanted to be the energetic, loving, passionate father and husband that I wanted to be then I couldn’t fake my fitness. I had to push myself to work hard, to live by example, and to find joy in the journey. If I want my wife and children to live a strong, vibrant life I knew I had to embody that.
What about you?
Now is just as good as any to find more within you and work towards your goals. The calendar does not matter. What does matter is the sooner you answer these questions the sooner you can find fulfillment, alignment, and achievement.
