Here’s A Better Option…
We here it all the time, “I just need to get back on the horse.” Or how about, “I fell off the wagon,” or “I’ve been really good the past three weeks,” or “I just need to lose 20 pounds REALLY quickly,” or “just tell me what to eat.”
Does this sound like your train of thought when it comes to dieting? Have you said this to your friends, family members or even fitness professionals? If you have do not worry, you are certainly not alone.
Hi, my name is Gary Vesper and I am the Founder and Head Coach of Driven Fitness and Performance, and I DO NOT believe in diets. I do not believe in them because they do not work. You might be wondering how can I say that because you have seen or heard or read about people who have lost weight on a certain special diet. That’s great if they have! My point is that for a very large percentage of the population diets are not something people can stick to for the LONG HAUL. It is not something that people can make a part of their life and for YEARS be able to manage.
So this is what happens:
- You say to yourself one of the above lines over and over again
- You then go on the internet or listen to a friend or just start watching what you eat
- Maybe you lose 10-20 pounds, maybe you don’t over the next 3-10 weeks
- You feel great about your progress but you feel the strain of how hard the diet life is
- You begin to “fall off the wagon”
- Weight comes back on
- Net weight loss 10-20 weeks after diet is +- 5 pounds
- You feel inept in the diet process and frustrated
With this scenario I believe that diets do not offer the SKILL SETS necessary to live a healthy life for the rest of your life. They do not TEACH you what good nutrition looks like, they do not provide STRATEGIES, or education or continued support and accountability throughout a process that should take longer than a couple of weeks. And they certainly are not build around HABITS.
For instance, if you are 50 years old right now reading this article, how long have you had your excess weight that you would like to lose? My guess would be years. Okay, so do you think you have the necessary habits, skills, knowledge, consistency, and motivation to all of a sudden change your ENTIRE eating lifestyle in a couple of weeks, lose all of the excess weight you have been carrying and then keep it off for good?
Maybe you do and maybe you have already done it. If so, AMAZING! I am not here to say that you can’t just start watching what you eat and you can do this thing yourself. I am saying that most people have tried it NUMEROUS times already that way and have not seen the success they wanted.
Shouldn’t there be a better way then?
Here at Driven we do not offer meal plans anymore for the reasons I have just stated. Instead, we believe there is a better way to attack your nutrition and weight loss goals!
- Habits Win
Habits are what we do every single day to make the necessary changes in your life so you can see results consistently and then be able to keep the weight off for good. If you do not have the right habits it does not matter how great the meal plan is you will eventually fall off and revert back to your old eating styles.
Habits challenge us to do the simple things to be successful. They make us aware of how easy it is if we just allow ourselves to do it over and over again.
If we create rock solid habits then we win.
- One Habit At A Time
We want to lose weight and all of a sudden “gung-ho syndrome” kicks in and we want to revamp our entire lifestyle over night. This creates burnout and a feeling of inadequacy.
Instead, focus on one nutritional habit at a time. If you eat too fast work on consciously eating slower by putting your fork down in between bites. If you blow past your fullness cues work on stopping when you are 80% full.
By focusing on one habit at a time you build confidence in yourself and your ability to change. One at a time is manageable and it is rewarding because you see yourself consciously making a decision to do something and then you do it!
Also, the true beauty of One Habit At A Time is that when you start to build on top with other “Ones” then all of a sudden you start to have 4,5, 6, 7 etc. healthy habits that are all benefiting you.
Winning becomes contagious and you know you can do the next One just like you did all of the others. That’s the power of One Habit At A Time!
- Habits Are Skill Sets
The true power of habits is that they build skill sets for life. Diets are the equivalent of giving you a fish, but not teaching you HOW to fish.
If we want to be healthy for the next 20-50 years than we need to be skilled enough to execute the choices we need to make. Habits teach you how to do just that.
Imagine, focusing on the habit of eating protein at every meal. You are learning how you can get quality protein throughout the day, you are learning about the benefits of protein in your life, you are learning where protein hides in unexpected places, and then you are applying this information into action.
You are not a helpless follower anymore; instead you control your ship and where you want to take it.
If we want to be successful at anything in life we need to have the knowledge and then the ability to EXECUTE the mission. Building up your nutrition and lifestyle skills is the only way to guarantee that you are ready for the long haul, which is healthy living.
